BEDSIDE RUMOURS · REMOTE NURSING

Snakebites, Smokes & the Midnight Whipper Snipper

A recollection of one unpredictable night in Central Australia.

A patient arrived at the remote clinic after a reported snakebite. With flooding and rain complicating travel, an RFDS transfer was organised.

But the aircraft couldn't land until the vegetation around the airstrip lights was cleared.

The community coordinator phoned the usual mowing contractor. Convinced the snakebite was a joke, he told the caller to get lost.

Instead, another nurse's husband headed out with a whipper snipper in the middle of the night.

Back at the clinic, the patient kept asking for cigarette breaks. The nurses found themselves bringing the ambulance trolley outside and back while waiting for retrieval.

The flight finally departed around dawn.
